March 2024 Volunteer Highlight: Sara-Maude Audy

What programs do you support at JHC?

Social Stride. [I also supported] the Ignite Change Convention/75th Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

How and why did you first get involved with JHC?

My friend told me that the JHC was looking for someone to do volunteer work in translation, and since that's what I'm studying in university, I immediately said yes!

What are your (volunteer) activities and what do they involve?

I support translation of materials related to Social Stride from English to French to support bilingual presentation of educational materials via social media.

How long have you been a volunteer for this initiative (and for JHC as a whole)?

Since October 2023 (6 months)

What is it like to volunteer for this initiative?

It's so rewarding! I love being able to practice what I learn in school, I love the people, and I love what the JHC stands for.

What has surprised you most about this role?

How challenging certain texts can be. Context is everything! Research is a big part of what I do.

Are there any learnings/ challenges you have experienced through this work?

I sometimes encounter new words. As someone who doesn't have English as their mother tongue, I need to look up certain terms in the dictionary before translating them. It only makes the word bank in my head get bigger. Having deadlines is also something I'm learning to deal with, but I love it, I love structure!
