Beyond "One-Off" Training: How JHC Partners with Organizations to Build Structural Equity

Renée Vaugeois

In today’s workplace, many organizations recognize the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion, but often struggle to move past temporary, "one-off" training sessions. At the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (JHC), we believe true transformation requires more than just learning new terminology, it demands a structural shift. Through our customized consultancy and training services, we partner with organizations to apply a rigorous rights-based lens, transforming organizational cultures from the inside out.

The Power of a Rights-Based Approach

A rights-based approach evaluates an organization through the core pillars of human rights: Participation, Inclusion, Accountability, and Protection. Instead of treating equity as an analytical footnote, this framework assesses how power, discrimination, and historical inequities manifest within internal structures, policies, and daily relationships. It empowers teams to view lived experiences not merely as anecdotes, but as essential expertise that must actively shape governance and decision-making.

Inside the Process with CSU52

Recently, JHC facilitated a full-day, multi-layered strategy session with over 35 leaders, stewards, and staff from the Civic Service Union (CSU52). The process was designed to bridge the gap between community-based reflection and executive action.

The Morning Session (Grounding & Assessment): Stewards and executives came together for a deep-dive on anti-oppression and reflection on how oppression might appear in their workplace and in the union. The workshop ended with an anonymous Rights-Based Assessment. Participants evaluated the union across critical areas, establishing a clear, data-driven "human rights temperature" of the organization.

The Afternoon Session (Strategic Roadmapping): Armed with real-time data from the morning, we moved into an applied intensive session with the CSU52 Board. Together, we translated these emergent thoughts into a concrete strategic roadmap to centre lived experience and support for stewards coming from diverse ethnic, racial and gender backgrounds.

Moving from Values to Structure: The 90-Day Sprint

The CSU52 leadership walked away with a tailored 90-day action plan targeting structural and relational change. This includes integrating the JHC Four Pillars module directly into upcoming Shop Steward training, piloting real-time digital feedback mechanisms to capture accessibility barriers, and designing dedicated resource toolkits to empower self-organized IBPOC spaces.

As the CSU52 leadership noted at the close of our session:

"The assessment showed we have the trust of our members, but we lack the systems to support that trust long-term. By focusing on Governance, Feedback, and Intentional Spaces, we move from being a Union that 'values' diversity to a Union that is 'structured' for equity."
