Volunteer Highlight: Sheila Robert

How and why did you first get involved with the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (JHC)?

After learning about the work of the organization, I wanted to learn more and contribute.

How long have you been a volunteer with JHC?

Two years.

Can you describe some of the activities you do as a volunteer?

I serve on the Board of Directors and the Community Engagement sub-committee. My contributions include policy development and increasing the visibility of the organization by attending and participating in various events and educational opportunities as a representative.

What is it like to volunteer with JHC as a whole?

Volunteering with JHC provides inspiring opportunities to collaborate with people who value human rights and peace.  JHC empowers you to amplify the positive change you want to see in the world.

What has surprised you the most about this role?

How I feel after meetings and events.  Today's challenges can leave you feeling overwhelmed and defeated, but after every event or board meeting, I leave feeling hopeful and inspired.

Are there any learnings or challenges you have experienced through this work that you’d like to share?

My experience with JHC has taught me the power of collective action serves as a reminder of how small acts contribute to larger impacts.

Anything else you'd like to share with us about your volunteer experience? Or insights you'd share with volunteers interested in supporting this type of work?

Volunteering with JHC, working with compassionate people and volunteers, is an antidote to feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of the world.  It is an opportunity to be part of a community of hope and inspiration.
