Project: Stride Advocacy - Understanding the Impact and Role of Community-Based Advocacy on Access to Remedy Mechanisms in Alberta

Background

Stride Advocacy is a project established in 2016 to provide direct support to individuals facing discrimination in accessing justice and remedy mechanisms outside traditional routes within the justice system. These alternative avenues are often challenging to navigate due to factors such as cost and time constraints. Through extensive case work, Stride Advocacy has amassed valuable data on effective support strategies and available remedy options. This data is crucial for understanding how community-driven approaches to justice and remedy can enhance human rights mechanisms.

Role Description

As a Research Assistant with Stride Advocacy, you will play a pivotal role in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data gathered from Stride cases. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Qualitative Data Analysis: Reviewing and analyzing case outcomes, identifying best practices, identification and application of relevant human rights and other legislation in case resolution, and extracting lessons learned from individual cases.

  • Quantitative Data Analysis: Examining data to identify patterns and trends in human rights violations, including identifying protected grounds of discrimination and areas of accepted and rejected complaints which will inform systemic advocacy efforts.

  • Focus Groups: Hosting and documenting 2 focus groups with Stride Advocates as a way to deepen understanding and evaluate work.

  • Report Development: Compiling findings into a comprehensive written report that highlights key insights and recommendations for strengthening human rights remedy mechanisms.

Qualifications

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Excellent research and written communication skills to effectively convey findings and recommendations.

  • Familiarity with human rights issues, mechanisms (including case resolution processes), legislation and advocacy work is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Commitment to upholding confidentiality and sensitivity when handling case data.

Terms of Contract

The contract would be based in Edmonton starting in May 2024 and ending August 30, 2024.

The Research Assistant will work 35 hours/week on a flexible schedule.

This position is flexible and can be done mostly remote;  however, we ask that one day a week is planned in-office so direct support can be provided.

The rate of pay for this position will be $28/hour.
