Human Rights and Freedoms: Advocacy Workshop Series presented by Rock Soup

Join us for a workshop training series led by Craig Haavaldsen from Rock Soup Greenhouse and Food Bank, with support from Righting Relations Canada and the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.

This series of 4 workshops are designed to assist, identify, and overcome many of the complex barriers when filing a Human Right’s Claim. The workshops will promote equitable access to those most disproportionately represented; through inclusive representation, empowerment to participate, trauma informed practices, and cultural awareness. The half day interactive sessions are intended to promote a tangible, actionable and safe process for identifying and filing human rights related complaints. All session will be facilitated online via ZOOM; a link will be sent to registrants a few days before each session.

Breakdown of 4-part workshop series with detailed descriptions and dates:

Workshop 1: Grounding In And On The Charter
Thursday, October 12 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM MST

The first of the series will go over the various sections of the act, protected environments, and how it intersections with many of the marginalized communities. Unpacking barriers regarding the various social determinants of health and how that impacts an individual’s access to Human Rights as described in the charter. The workshop is delivered through mixed media, small group, and large group facilitation. Participants will leave with a greater awareness, applicable and tangible skills to apply the charter to advocate for those it effects and the barriers people face.

Workshop 2: For the people, by the people, with the people
Thursday, October 26, 1:00 - 4:00 PM MST

This workshop will focus on the utilization of a trauma informed process and the ABC’s of observation/reporting. A priority focus is to include the diverse community living and experiencing human rights related events; people with disabilities, marginalized communities, Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQIA2S+ and any other minority communities to assure they have autonomy throughout the different steps if the collaborative process. The group will develop a template document to assist those with barriers to track, report and file. This workshop will be facilitated through various mixed media, small and large group, and various role play. Participants will leave with a copy of the reporting tool, steps of trauma informed communication, inclusive participation and how that affects disclosures, reporting, and documentation.

Workshop 3: Grounding in Hell
Thursday, November 9, 1:00 - 4:00 PM MST

Throughout this half day there will be various grounding, meditation, body scans and debrief exercises.The online complaint process for Alberta, RCMP and Federal. We will go through each website to mitigate any potential barriers to apply online. A review of the enforcement services, municipal, provincial, and federal complaint/conflict resolution process. Participants will leave with a balanced toolbox to address complaints and to promote self-care and health and wellbeing. There will be a greater understanding of the process, stakeholders, and the many paths to file a human rights claim.

Workshop 4: Can’t Pour from An Empty Cup
Thursday, January 18 (2024), 1:00 - 3:30 PM MST

How to debrief, document, learn and action from each other and each incident. Identifying the actionable next steps and determining the barriers. The importance of creating and maintaining a safety, personally/professional mentally/physically, throughout this process. How to identify lateral violence, how to mitigate and support each other collaboratively throughout the process. How to identify potential risks/safety issues associated with in a crisis. How to utilize video recording, high visibility, and teams to mitigate safety issues. This facilitation will be large group discussion and exercises. The use of mixed media and physical movement the participants will leave with focus on maintaining balance, through collaboration.
