Racism Free Edmonton

In partnership with Racism Free Edmonton (RFE), the John Humphrey Centre is pleased to announce training for the Advocates for a Racism Free Edmonton program.  As part of the RFE initiative, this program  will equip youth with the skills necessary to educate peers about the different forms of racism,  how racism connects to human rights, as well as how to help mitigate and respond to racism on a day-to-day basis.  This is a certificate program that is aimed at youth between 15 to 21 years of age.

The goals of the program are to:

  • train youth to be Advocates for a Racism Free Edmonton,
  • equip youth with the materials and resources required to be Advocates,
  • equip youth with the knowledge and skills needed to work productively towards a Racism Free Edmonton,
  • enable youth to acquire a good understanding of the different kinds of racism, the causes and effects of racism in their communities, how human rights and racism connect, and
  • encourage youth to strive for a culture of respect for human rights and to stand against racism.

The day and a half workshop is designed to lay a foundation for tomorrow’s society by targeting youth through empowerment and prepare them to deliver anti-racism education in schools and other youth programs. They will enhance their ability to recognize, flag and discourage racism.

Following the comprehensive day and a half workshop, Advocates will support the outreach and education on Racism in Edmonton by delivering sessions in the community to receive certification as a Racism Free Edmonton Youth Advocate.  We want everyone to know that the City of Edmonton is launching the Racism Free Edmonton initiative and the Youth Advocates will play an important role in this role.

Successful completion of the training program will enable participants to conduct Racism Free Edmonton workshops and presentations to other youth. Following the completion of a community project and successful delivery of three RFE sessions to their peers after the workshop training, the Youth Advocates will receive their certificate of completion.
