Expressing Issues that Matter to Rural Youth
As part of the Ignite Change Now! Rural Youth Program, the JHC is launching a campaign throughout the remainder of 2010 focused on bringing the rural youth voice to the forefront of policy discussions and engaging rural youth in positive leadership and social action in their communities and throughout the province.
Throughout May and June, our Rural Youth Outreach Coordinator would like to come to your high school to host a session with your students. The program would range from 1-3 hours depending on youth availability; it fits within the Social Studies curriculum! This program is provided for FREE thanks to funding from the Government of Canada’s Multiculturalism Program.
The Coordinator will deliver a program linked to curriculum on human rights and citizenship and:
- engage youth in experiential activities to explore human rights concepts and responsibilities (based on our 12 year-running Rights in the Sun Program);
- integrate an art media component and dialogue to enable youth in expressing concerns or opportunities they envision for youth in rural communities
The information from these activities will become part of a Youth Voices publication which will be made available online as well as to key municipal, provincial and federal government agencies and stakeholders.
Background on Rural Youth Program
The  Centre has been involved in rural youth programming since January 2008, working in 9 communities conducting dialogues and leadership programs to bridge diverse youth and engage them in leadership in their communities. In the summer of 2009, working with the Rural Secretariat, the Centre brought together rural youth from throughout the province to assess how to bring the voice of rural youth to the table and to engage them in opportunities to enhance their skills. Since then, the Centre is actively working in Lethbridge and surrounding areas delivering leadership training programs as well as working towards a larger Rural Youth Forum in the fall of 2010.
